"Ross on Wye, weekend in a hotel, get-together with a crystal skull Friday, workshop Saturday - how about it?" I asked my husband. I fancied it, but I could see him pulling a face. On second thoughts, a roomful of New Age 'luvvies' was bound to send his blood pressure rocketing - he has a short fuse when it comes to the pretentious - I well remember when he was introduced to a TV presenter in an orange jacket with contact lenses to match - he more or less had to have his head rewired. So I went with Michelle, a fellow occult-worker. We had a bad journey down, six hours on the motorway in heavy traffic and rain like stair-rods, we arrived with minutes to spare, threw our bags in our rooms and hurried off to the old stable block for our first meeting with Chuen - as this particular skull is called. From my research on the internet, I knew that crystal skulls are one of today's biggest enigmas - impossible to date, unless they are found with organic matter clinging to them - which they aren't - extravagant claims are often made for their antiquity. Found in Mayan or Aztec ruins in Central America, brought out of steaming jungles by shamans, kept in backrooms by Buddhist monks, they began to make their appearance early last century, but got a spurt on in the 80s when the scientific and academic world began to sit up and take notice. There are two kinds of crystal skulls in the world - the ancient ones, which have so far eluded all attempts to discredit them, and The Rest. These are now being manufactured in great quantities in Brazil, China and a part of Germany which has been carving crystal for as long as anyone cares to remember. Some are so good the only way to really tell is to turn them over and read the price tag! Chuen - well the jury is out on that one. He was 'discovered' in a boutique called 'The Amazon' in a small town in Southern Spain after his present owner, Wendy, had spent eight months journeying up and down that very river in South America on the instructions of her Spirit Guide! Pity about discarnate entities, they are so very vague! People lucky enough to have one of the Ancient Ones - blessed with such evocative names as 'Windsong', 'Grandmother Rainbow', 'Blue Star Maiden', 'Sha Na Ra' - regard themselves as 'caretakers' or 'guardians'. This is because the skulls are an entity in themselves, and it would be as insulting to say you 'own' them as to claim to own another human being. But even those with an unashamedly 'new' skull say that after an initial period in their company, the skull begins to 'wake up'. Usually the first sign that this is happening is that the skull will tell the guardian its name. The true purpose of the skulls is to heal. They dispense a calming energy, which we felt the minute we walked in the room where Chuen was. The Native American elders say their mission is to bring all the children of Earth together, so we can begin to heal our Mother instead of ripping her apart, as we are now doing. They can also be used for scrying, rather like a crystal ball, but better, as those who have worked in this way say each side (and there are six) gives a different picture or story. The usual approach is down through the top of the head, and as Chuen was passed round the circle, I gave it a go. On this first pass I saw nothing, but sitting with my hands each side of the skull, I began to feel a deep, slow pulse, like the beat I feel in our outdoor circle, when we all join hands around the upside down tree, or like when I hold someone's hands to give them healing energy. Because we were a small group, later on Chuen went round for a second time. I sat with him in my lap, and looked down through the cranium. I saw that there were cracks, fissures, within the crystal, and was looking at these when I saw an opaque white shape, like a large bird with outstretched wings. Now it changed and became like a standing angel, with wings folded back. Then, so suddenly it made me gasp out loud, the picture of a man appeared. There was nothing cloudy or vague about it, such as I had always imagined pictures in a crystal ball would be - having to tease out a meaning, like reading tealeaves. This was as clear - well, as crystal! It was a finely etched portrait of a man, from the waist up. It could have been an engraving, or a pen and ink sketch - it was so detailed. The man wore a sports jacket, shirt and tie, had a moustache, and short, wiry curls that stood straight up from his forehead. He wore glasses. He was facing front, but looking slightly upwards and to his right. The words 'middle european' seemed to be associated with him. The portrait never changed or flickered in all the time I looked at it. It remained constant, sharp and clear. It stayed there for as long as I wanted to look. I felt I knew the man, yet also knew I did not. Maybe he was someone I would come to know in the future. The picture did not appear flat on the screen, like a tv picture - it was as though it was visible through a narrow crack. It seemed to me that if I moved my vantage point slightly, I might see more, but if I did, it disappeared, though when I moved back it was again visible. In the end I let Chuen go, and watching him as he went round the circle, saw he was full of large drops of golden light. I only held him once more - at the end of the Saturday session, when almost everyone had gone, Michelle and I took him off the table and sat with him between us on the bench. She put her hands round the sides, so I put mine on top. I felt the strong pulse again, and after a while my right hand began to feel very hot. I rationalised that this was a natural phenomenon and not the skull, but as soon as I had the thought my palm felt as though it was being burnt by a laser. Just when I thought I would have to pull it away, it suddenly became icy cold. I think Chuen was just demonstrating what he could do. At the Friday session, Wendy had told us we might have strange dreams, and asked us to report any to her on the Saturday. Mine wasn't exactly a dream. About a week before coming away, I heard a tip for sleeping (I have trouble sometimes) - to imagine one's deity at the side of the bed, and then to hand her/him one's conscious mind, then the subconscious mind, finally the unconscious. For some reason I chose to visualise Chuen, though I had not at that point met him, or perhaps it was just an anonymous crystal skull. The visualisation worked a treat, I never got further than the conscious mind. In the hotel on Friday night, I could not sleep. I decided to try the visualisation, immediately saw Chuen, but completely changed. He was sitting on top of one of the Mayan pyramids, looking straight at me, and the whole picture was full of a dark red glow. I tried to order him to return to his normal cool crystal self, and to sit at the side of the bed, but nothing I could do changed it. He remained staring at me with his dark eye sockets. We stayed over Saturday, and again I had difficulty sleeping. This time the image had changed again. Chuen had come down from the top of the pyramid, behind him was a large grey structure which I took to be a multi-storey car park, though on reflection that does rather resemble a pyramid. He had his right side turned towards me, grey smoke was coming out of his eye sockets and all around him was grey mist. I asked Michelle if she had seen the golden light when Chuen was passing round the circle, she was surprised, saying he was full of bright, scintillating light, red, green and blue. Interesting! We had both noticed how he changed on the Saturday, when Jayson Stilwell came to sing to him. Wendy explained that Jayson's 'singing' (a kind of Tibetan chanting) was part of a process to 'activate' Chuen, and that this was the third (and final) time Jayson was to sing to him. Placed on a table directly in front of Jayson, two beams of light shot out of his eyes, and if you could believe such a thing could happen, he appeared to have tilted his face upwards and fixed his gaze on Jayson, even his lips appeared to be parted. He certainly looked very happy! Is this possible? I have read that crystal has strange properties, and that it can and does change its shape and structure under certain resonances. Scientists have tried to categorize, measure and define the skulls, but have failed so far to prove them conclusively fake or genuine. There are many theories as to their existence and purpose, as well as to their effects. Crystal has been used in healing for centuries, and is being used today to store information in computers, watches and machines. So who is to say the skulls have not been programmed with ancient knowledge? A stone carving in a Mayan temple shows a noblewoman holding a skull in her hand. A serpent-like form arches above her, and she looks upward as the image of her ancestor emerges from its mouth. Fanciful imagery? This 'vision serpent' has been caught on video by an alternative practitioner using Kirlian photography to track changes in the aura of patients undergoing crystal therapy. To his astonishment, a white, snake-like object moved up out of the crystal and slithered towards the patient. This could not be seen with the naked eye, only on the Kirlian camera - it was happening in another dimension, and that is where we have to go if we want to truly understand the crystal skulls.
