Speculations on the future of mankind.
How would you feel, as you watched lush, green vegetation and countless species of animal life gradually engulfed by a pollution belching, concrete hell? How do you feel as you peer through the acid rain, smog, carbon monoxide, etc., etc., etc. to see the parasitic leeches sucking and snarling and tearing at each other? Somewhere amongst the six billion maggots is you. You are just one more diseased cell in the body of a virulent cancer that is infecting planet Earth The fashion accessory cries of outrage from the environmentally friendly, the liberals and the religious factions all rally about the slogan: "We are killing this planet." Fine, strong words, but it has to be remembered that this planet was once a molten fireball. Even if our technological advances reduce it back to a significant fraction of that state; it would eventually recover. The same could not be said for Mankind. Quantum mechanics states that even the act of observing an experiment may significantly affect its outcome. A teacher who wishes to assess the true potential and tendencies of his students is faced with three obstacles. Firstly, the physical presence of a teacher will affect the students' behavior. Second, the constraints of the lesson itself will filter the students' qualities of improvisation and adaptability. Third, any implied gain, benefit or reward for the students would alter their natural tendencies. How, then, is a clear picture to be drawn? Imagine a situation whereby at the start of the lesson, the teacher writes on a blackboard: "The object of this lesson is to deduce what the lesson is." The teacher informs his class that they are to be left to their own devices for a specific period of time. During this, the students, by whatever means, must determine the nature of the lesson and state this to the teacher, upon his return at the end of the allotted time. Each student naturally believes that the lesson can only begin once the teacher returns. It is also understandable for the student to assume that no personal gain or profit is possible, because the longer one knows the answer, the more one is held up waiting for the teacher to return and teach it. They are wrong in both instances. Imagine that the Human species is such a class. The 'best' answers thus far postulated are to be found nestling in the great tree of religion. This tree has many, many leaves and branches. All of which confuse the clarity of the picture. However, all leaves are connected to a twig. Each twig is connected to a small branch. Each small branch is connected to a larger branch. Ultimately, all branches can be traced to a single trunk, which originated from a tiny seed. If it were possible to pour each and every thought -be this written or spoken- relating to religious, mystical or supernatural matters into a large pot, and then to distill this immense mass into a single word: What do you suppose this word would be? Think about this question for a moment. What word would you use to encapsulate the entire corpus of 'other world' ideas? If you are able to formulate such a word, you should next consider very carefully what this word actually means. Can you define your interpretation of this word within the constraints of a single sentence? Are you able to comprehend what this word is actually trying to say? Whilst you are considering these things, I shall tell an old joke.
Returning to our earlier question: One does not have to look too far for an answer. Almost every home has a Bible, and the vast majority of children and adults are familiar with its contents. In the Bible is written: "The Word of the Logos is Agape."In other words, Agape is the word which Jesus brought to Earth on behalf of His Father. Agape means 'Love.' The Bible also provides us with ten physical conditions of this word (the Ten Commandments.) For the purposes of this essay, we need only consider one of these. This being: "Treat others as you would like to be treated." If each individual on this planet took that one phrase to heart, the world would become a better place overnight. Not even the most devout atheist could dispute this. The adoption of this simple stance is not difficult. It does not require a large, complex training program. Nor does it require any great effort. It wouldn't cost anything; would have no detrimental effects on the life of the individual and would bring so many benefits. So, why does this not happen? Why do we as a species prefer to act in a selfish, greedy, ignorant and extremely destructive manner? How is it possible for the custodians of our souls to have allowed themselves to have become so entrenched in a word-mire of their own creation. How is is possible that Mankind has managed to completely misunderstand a Law comprising a one syllable word of just four letters? In the final sections of www.tobew.com I will to draw together the many ideas presented on these pages into a short summary, the conclusions of which are neither pleasant nor optimistic: But their truth cannot be disputed. |
